National Juniors and Masters Championships - Results (27/04/08) What a great weekend of lifting! Powerlifting Australia hosted our best young and "old" talent at the National Juniors and Masters Championships on April 19-20 at Melbourne University. Combined with this event, the National ABSF Championships, Intervarsity and Victorian Open were also held. Run by super-efficient meet director and top lifter, David Jame, this event had the largest participation for any single PA event for quite a while. The lifting was of particularly high standard also with Wim Van Weenen breaking his over 70 years World Deadlift record ripping up 237.5kg. Anne Mort had a great comp, breaking National and International masters records and the younger lifters like Amy-Lea Mills pulled up an enormous 190kg Deadlift and Anita Millington benched 122.5kg. In the open event, the big mover, both figuratively and literally was super-heavyweight Nathan "The Preacher" Baxter who finally puts the numbers on the board which included the biggest bench in PA history at 262.5kg! "Golden Oldies" feature on Ten news (25/04/08) "My hair's going grey, my eyes are going, my ears are going, my teeth are falling out ..... and I grew a muscle!" That is the cry of 71 year old PA lifter, Sonja Rutherford. Ten News recently ran a story shortly before the Masters and Juniors National Championships, which covered the benefits of Powerlifting for older lifters. It features John and Sonja Rutherford, as well as our World Record deadlifter Wim Van Weenen. Check it out on YouTube. Click here.
John Myers moves into second after opponent's doping positive (21/03/08) Not for the first time our John "Hollywood" Myers has moved up a position in the Masters World Championships due to a higher finishing opponent producing a positive doping test. Initially, John finished in third place at the 2007 Masters World Championships in the over 50, 67.5kg class. The Polish lifter and initial winner, Adam Jasinski, returned a positive test from that competition. This resultant disqualification of Jasinski means Myers takes the silver position overall. Powerlifting Australia, through the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) is fully committed to fair play in Powerlifting and congratulates John's move to second in the world.
Media Release - Diuretic case continues the war on drugs in sport Powerlifting Australia applauds the action of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) in detecting and enforcing a case of diuretic use in Powerlifting. Powerlifter Peter Costigan has returned a positive sample for Furosemide, a drug on the banned list, which can give competitive advantage in a bodyweight class such as Powerlifting.
